[About “QC” Management]

[RoHS]

The RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Management is adopted its implementation policies of factory as a guide worldwide. The temperature of soldering iron tip could be insulated and resisted in application of RoHS management.

The photos above show the testers to measure the substances, normally each tester is prepared separately for Lead(Pb)-Free and for Lead. In term of consideration of reducing the possibility of mistakes from happening, training should be conducted to workers about the concept and its methods of using the testers separately for any single substance.

Does it work?

Cream solder, solder bar, and solder – wrong mixture of materials, misuse designated direct materials, records errors are mistakes that occurred due to limited workers. Otherwise this would be difficult from happening.

However, problem incurred attributed to its surroundings instead of the material itself.

When operators are doing regular temperature checking (generally twice per shift), they always do not use the testers for the temperature checking. If in the event of damage or broken during the production, would the operators still holding the same action? The most likely answer will be “NO”.

Measurement should be taken at certain timing by operators; prior temperature shall be recorded or checked before the production runs.    

[Problem Occurs]

The problem occurs here!

After using Pb Free/Lead soldering iron commonly, the lead paste will be affixed on the iron tip, and as its consequence, the lead will be affixed on Pb Free PCB .

According to the RoHS compliance, the maximum lead mixture permitted concentration is 1,000ppm. Though it is small amount in milligrams, but it will easily exceed the limit after numerous of accumulation.

According to the fluorescence X-rays analysis machine in some factories, Pb Free paste (Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu) is contained. Even if it depended on the irradiation angle of fluorescence X-rays, 150-500ppm contained at a test result.

Normally, an operator seldom handle materials wrongly, but eventually lead is been wrongly placed on Pb-Free board, even though it’s just a few milligram, but it still could be founded under inspection, it could be 300-500ppm. It will exceed easily 10,000ppm or more.  As result, it causes large damages which worth a few thousands of million USD.

I think this damage could impose adequately to education and the training for a worker.

It is not only the reputation of manufacturers being fluctuated; I think the damage is imposed terribly to the victims. However, I wonder are workers really the party that should be blamed?

It’s encouraged to compliant both environment and the implementation policies.

During the process of using Lead paste and Pb-Free paste, people or things in between could easily cause the NG enviroment! Thus, all factories must improve the workforce environment in order to offer a workplace mistakes-free. 

[Conclusion]

In every manufacturing workplace, all conditions must stand the basis of “ a worker would make mistakes”.Human being certainly shows sophisticated ability and creativity where the elements are impossible presented by machines. However the insatiate repeated work tasks will not perfectly presented by workers besides machines. The basis of the management for the production is to repeat the same movements and works without any mistakes. The excellent workplace could become apparent with the change of RoHS compliance.  

I think this aspect would help in your consideration on how QC control should be carried out.
